Button French Cuffs

,

French cuff shirts are usually worn with cuff links.

French cuff shirts are among the most formal dress option for men. French cuffs require cuff links or silk knots to close the cuffs of the shirt. Cuff links come in a variety of shapes, colors and materials. Most are metal, although they may have jewels or pearl incorporated into the design and consist of two, button-like pieces connected by a piece of metal chain or a button-like piece and an anchor-like piece. Silk knots are less flashy, and consist of two small fabric balls connected by a thread.

Instructions

1. Place the two ends of the cuff overlapping each other. Place one end over the other so that the two button holes line up. This is the barrel-style of buttoning cuffs, and more closely resembles a regular cuff on a dress shirt.

2. Push one end of the cuff link or silk knot through both button holes on the cuff. The button holes should have one end of the cuff link on both sides of the cuff, keeping the button holes pinched together. Do the same for the other cuff. This completes buttoning cuffs in the barrel-style.

3. Place the undersides of each end of the cuff where the button holes are up against each other so that the cuff pushes out where the button holes are. This is the kissing style of buttoning French cuffs and is more common on French cuff shirts.

4. Push the cuff link or silk knot through the button holes until both ends of the cuff are pinched together by the cuff link. Do the same for the other cuff.
