Chin Strap Styles

,

The chin strap is a style of beard that resembles the chin strap of a helmet. As with any type of facial hair style, variations of the chin strap exist, some of which look better on certain types of men. In its most basic form, the strap consists of sideburns that meet under the chin to form a chin strap beard, worn without a mustache.

Chin Curtain

The chin curtain is the standard form of chin strap. This style features thick sideburns that meet underneath the chin in the middle. Since the beard is thick, it makes the "strap" wide. Some men grow beards thicker than others. The beard extends about halfway up the chin, to a spot between the bottom of the chin and the bottom lip, and is about an inch wide on the sides.

Thin Strap

The thin chin strap is the style of people who don't have as-thick facial hair or who keep their hair very short. It is a thin strip that varies in size form person to person, but it is always thinner than an inch, and usually thinner than half an inch. Both sideburns meet under the chin, and are only slightly visible on the front of the chin. This is a less burly form of chin strap since it is thinner and smaller than the thick chin strap.

Scruffy Strap

The scruffy chin strap is styled the same as the previous two, but it is more of an unkempt look. This type of beard consists of a five o'clock shadow above the chin strap. To get this look, keep your beard thinned out and use the same technique you use to grow a five o'clock shadow to get the scruffy look. Every man grows his five o'clock shadow differently because beards grow at different speeds and lengths. If your beard grows fast, this may not be the best option for you because it needs to constantly be trimmed.

Bald Chin Strap

The bald chin strap is a style in which you combine a bald head with a chin strap. Even though some men cannot grow hair on the top of their heads, they can often still grow sideburns and beards. Decide if a chin curtain or thin chin strap is best for you based on your personal amount of hair growth. The top of the chin strap is cut straight across. This can be worn by men with receding hairlines as well, but it is most striking on a man with a bald head.
