Luau Costume Ideas
Luau costume ideas can be easy to come up with if you want to go the traditional route. If you want to be more fun and original, it will take more thought and creativity. Either way there are several good luau costumes that you can use to dress up for Halloween, a luau party or a beach party.
Traditional Hula Girl
The traditional hula girl costume consists of a grass skirt, tank or bikini top, or a bikini top made from coconut shells. Wear sandals or go barefoot. Add a flower to your hair, a flower bracelet or headband, or a lei to accessorize. Do a few hula dances to play the part of a traditional hula girl. You can also bob your head a lot and tell everyone that you are a hula girl bobble head doll.
Silly Hula Girl
Some guys like to get a big laugh by dressing up as women. They can use the traditional items for a hula girl costume with some added accessories to make the costume more fun. Some of these accessories can be a long wig and something to stuff the bikini top with. A man may also want to use the coconut shell bra for the added laugh factor.
Pineapple
Pineapples usually have some role in a luau. You can choose to dress up as a pineapple for your luau costume. You can buy a pineapple costume or choose to make your own with a cardboard box. Draw the lines on the cardboard to make it look like a pineapple. Then use a marker or some paint for the colors. Make a headdress that looks like the top of the pineapple and you are set.
Beach Bum or Surfer
This is one of the easier luau costumes. Carry around a boogie board or a surf board, put some colored sunscreen on your nose and under your eyes, and wear a bathing suit or swim shorts. Be sure to use some of the beach bum and surfer lingo like surfs up, dude, bodacious, bummer, cowabunga and any other surfer lingo that will help you act the part to go along with the costume.
Tourist
There are many times that tourists show up when there is a luau. To create the perfect tourist costume, you can use some multi-colored flowered shorts, a flowered shirt, a big straw hat, big sunglasses, binoculars, a fanny pack and--the most important item--a camera. Walk around slowly looking at everything and taking pictures to act the part of a tourist.
