Proper Laundry Of Polo Shirts For Men

,

Proper Laundry of Polo Shirts for Men

Almost every man's wardrobe has at least one polo shirt, whether for work or play. Polo shirts are stylish yet comfortable. Most polo shirts are 100 percent cotton knit or a blend of a synthetic fiber and cotton, usually in the ratio of 20 percent synthetic fiber to 80 percent cotton. Because of the high percentage of cotton in polo shirts, shrinkage, fading and an ill fit after a few washings can be a problem. Knowing the proper way to launder your polo shirts will keep them looking new.

Washing

Unless otherwise noted on the care tag sewn into your polo shirts, cotton and cotton-blend polo shirts should be washed in cool water, both wash cycle and rinse cycle; otherwise you may shrink your polo shirt. To keep the color bright and the fabric surface more like new, turn your polo shirt inside out before washing it. It also helps to keep the collar and neckline in shape if you button all the buttons before washing. An all-purpose laundry soap is fine to use.

Drying

Drying polo shirts is where most people ruin their shirts. Never completely dry your polo in the dryer, and never use any setting that involves heat. You may briefly air dry your polo shirt in the dryer, but remove it while it is still damp to avoid shrinkage. Brief air drying will give the fabric some softness and plump the fibers.

When you remove your damp polo shirt from the dryer, or if you choose to not use the dryer, lay the polo shirt out on a flat surface, rather than hang it to dry. Hanging a polo shirt, even one that is only damp, tends to allow it to stretch and lengthen, distorting the sharp lines. You also run the risk of having bumps and lumps at the shoulders where the hanger was. By laying your polo shirt flat and shaping it a bit, you will retain more of the original shape and form.

Storing

After your polo shirt has completely dried, fold it like it was at the store where you bought it. Folding a polo shirt, rather than hanging it on a hanger, will retain its shape, not stretch it, and you will avoid any pucker or bumps at the shoulder and collar from using a hanger.

If the collar on your polo begins to roll, curl or pucker after a few washings, iron it. Spraying sizing, found in the laundry section of a grocery store, on the collar before ironing will help your polo shirt collar retain its original shape. Sizing, though slightly more expensive than starch, will not make your collar too stiff, as using spray starch will.

Different Knots For Dress Ties

,

A neck tie can help you stand out in a sea of business suits.

The necktie is a staple of every successful businessman's wardrobe. Most men pay attention to the colors and style of their ties, but fewer men learn the multiple ways a tie can be worn. Knowing the different knots for dress ties can help you subtly stand out in a blur of business suits.

Windsor Knot

A fat knot, such as a Windsor, can help your tie make a confident statement. The Windsor knot is perfect for work events or job interviews where networking skills and an outgoing personality are required. The Windsor is a wide triangular knot usually worn with wide spread collar shirts. For wild ties, make sure the pattern size matches your body scale. If you have medium-size features, wear medium-size patterns. If you have large features, it is best to stick with solid colors.

Four-in-Hand Knot

The four-in-hand knot is another sophisticated look. The four-in-hand is a narrow, slightly asymmetrical knot. Because it is small, this knot is good for ties made from a heavy fabric. The narrow, long knot appears to lengthen the neck and is therefore recommended for men with short necks. It has been dubbed the "smarter knot" because of its humble, intellectual look.

Prince Albert

The Prince Albert knot is a stylish and compact knot suitable for shirts with long collars. It is similar to the four-in-hand knot, but an extra wraparound makes it slightly more voluminous. Also known as a double-simple knot, the Prince Albert is a good choice for long ties made of soft materials.

Tux Centerpiece Ideas

Tuxedos, black tie and tails, vintage top hats and canes evoke a sense of elegance, style and timeless glamour. Whether you're hosting a formal dinner party, a wedding reception or dinner and dance or are in charge of prom decorations, you'll find that tux centerpiece ideas add ambience and flair to any decorating scheme.

Theme

Focusing upon a specific theme helps tie together all the elements in a wedding reception, prom or party. A generic theme such as "Formal Elegance," "Black Tie and Tails" or "Come Dance with Me" helps establish a focal point as you incorporate your. tux centerpiece idea. Items commonly associated with tuxedos such as top hats, bow ties, gloves and canes help call the theme to mind.

Flowers

Flowers offer perfect backdrops for tux centerpieces. Black and white tuxedos pop against white calla lilies, carnations and peonies as they do against red roses or pink Shasta daisies. Small clear glass votive candles with musical notes or piano keyboards add extra flair to floral centerpieces and fit in with the tuxedo theme.

Table coverings

Mirrors make stunning bases for tux centerpieces. So do squares of black-and-white checkerboard Poly vinyl, available from prom supply stores. Fill crystal or glass vases with glass marbles, acrylic ice cubes or water before adding flowers. Achieve a vintage effect with white pottery vases. Sprinkle mirrors and areas around centerpieces with black-and-white metallic top hat and bow tie confetti.

Shopping bags

An alternative to expensive flower arrangements is to set a shopping bag on base. Shopping bags are easily anchored with plastic bags of sand, old magazines or bricks if helium balloons will be attached. Shredded gold or silver Mylar or paper make good filler.

Silhouettes of a tuxedo or dancing couple wearing formal attire add beauty and dimension when attached to the sides of the bags. Computer print-outs in a beautiful font can spell out the theme or an appropriate phrase. Outline with a thin bead of white glue and lightly sprinkle with iridescent glitter, Add a few rhinestones for extra sparkle.

Tuck items such as black and white tuxedo garters or armbands into the shred or staple to the bag. Dancing couple silhouettes adhered to balloon sticks are festive additions as are sparkly single branches, black plastic canes or silver stars.

Balloons

Latex balloons are readily available from prom supply houses. Mix black and white balloons with ones featuring top hats and canes, musical notes and white gloves. Tied to shopping bag handles, they float high above guests' heads for obstruction-free conversation.

Additional Considerations

Tuxedo-front favor bags, as well as favor bags shaped like a bridal gown, can extend tuxedo centerpieces on larger tables. Prom supply houses sell larger top hats made from metal mesh or cardboard as well as Mylar falling shower centerpieces with top hats and stars. Mini top hats for use as party favors, top-hat booklet covers and three-dimensional 13-inch-high star centerpieces add extra dimension to tux centerpiece ideas.

Instructions For Wearing A Tie Clip

,

A tie clip can help keep your tie in place.

Tie clips, tie straps, tie pins and tie chains all pretty much serve the same purpose: They hold your tie in place and keep it from getting in the way of things. They also provide a noticeable accessory to your outfit, an accessory that can bear your alma-mater insignia or even your family crest. While putting on a tie clip may seem very basic, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind when wearing one.

Instructions

1. Select a tie clip that will match the metal in the rest of your outfit. For example, if your belt buckle is gold, wear a gold tie clip. If your cuff links and belt buckle are silver, select a silver tie clip.

2. Tie your tie as usual around your neck. Run the two pieces of your tie gently through your fingers, making sure neither piece is twisted. Squeeze the end of your tie clip near the hinges to open it.

3. Hold the two pieces of your tie evenly together with one hand. Slide the open mouth of your tie clip horizontally across the two pieces of your tie, securing them together. Place the tie clip in the direct middle of your third and fourth button holes. Make it perfectly straight across.

Explain Women'S Clothing Sizes

,

Selecting properly sized clothes is essential for women.

Many women wear clothes that are not their size. For some, their clothes are too much---either too tall or too large. For others, their clothes are not enough---too short or too tight. Not wearing the right size can hide a beautiful figure, destroy a woman's professional image, draw unwanted attention to unshapely body parts and make her look untidy. For these reasons, women must understand the sizing system behind female clothing. Since this system is straightforward and consistent, explaining it to another woman does not take much effort.

Instructions

1. Describe the difference between petite, average and tall sizes. Although most women's clothing is average-sized, not all women are of average height. Therefore, women often wear poorly fitting clothes that are too short or tall for them. Explain that women shorter than 5 foot, 3 inches are petite. Women between 5 foot, 3 inches and 5 foot, 7 ½ inches are average, and women taller than 5 foot, 7 ½ inches are tall.

2. Explain find a dress size. Most women's dress sizes range from a size 2 to size 18. Sizes above 18 are considered plus sizes and are available at specialty stores. Tell your listener that, to find dress size, she must find her bust, waist and hip measurements. To get her bust measurement, she should measure the fullest area of her chest. She must measure the smallest area of her waistline for waist measurements and the largest section of her hips for hip measurements. After getting these measurements, tell her to compare them to a size chart, which are available at any woman's clothing store. The size chart will reveal her numerical dress size.

3. Clarify the difference between small, medium, large and extra large sizes. Not all women's clothes correspond to numerical sizes. Most female shirts, sweats and athletic clothes correspond to small, medium, large and extra large sizes. Explain that, once she has her numerical dress size, she can easily determine whether she is a small, medium, large and extra large size. Generally, small sizes are for those with dress sizes of 2-6. Medium are for dress sizes of 8-10, large is for those who wear sizes 12-14 and extra large is for those who wear sizes 16-18.

4. Ask your listener to demonstrate her understanding of your explanations. One of the best ways to test her understanding is by having her explain it back to you. Also try asking her to measure herself and determine her clothing size in front of you. If she measures incorrectly, re-explain it to her and encourage her to ask questions along the way.

Make A Clipon Neck Tie

,

There are a couple ways you can make your own clip-on tie. You can either use a pattern for a clip-on tie, which requires the ability to sew rather well, or use a regular tie and adjust it to your needs. The following instructions will show you use a tie and turn it into a clip-on.

Instructions

1. Place your tie around your neck. Tie it like you usually do and make sure it is tightened to the way you want it tied.

2. Using scissors, cut the necktie 2 inches from the knot of the tie on each side. Then lay the tie onto a flat surface. Measure 1 inch from the knot and cut off the material. Make sure there are no threads dangling. If there are, cut them.

3. Bring the two ends toward the knot of the tie. Pin them into the knot. Sew the pinned material to the knot using the same color thread as the color of the tie.

4. Sew three small clips to the inner part of the knot. Sew them on at least 1/2-inch apart. Be sure to use thread that matches the tie.

5. Try the clip-on tie on. Make adjustments as needed. For example, if a clip needs to be moved over a little, then cut the thread and re-sew the clip where it will work better for you.

Measure The Rise & Inseam Of Women'S Slacks

,

Measuring to get the rise and inseam for a pair of women's slacks is fairly simple.

Measuring the rise and inseam of women's slacks is a skill that often comes in handy when shopping or purchasing clothing via the Internet. The days of having a trained tailor on duty in department stores are over-unless you are shopping in high-end clothing boutiques. Learning measure the rise and inseam yourself will help you purchase the proper size and avoid sending purchases back.

Instructions

1. Measure from the crotch, up the zipper to the button at the waist with a tape measure. This will determine the rise of the slacks.

2. Measure from just below the crotch, down the side of the leg to the bottom of the ankle with a tape measure. This measurement is your inseam.

3. Another way of determining the inseam of a pair of women's slacks is to lay them flat and fold them in half. Measure from the crotch, down the pant leg to the bottom of the cuff. This measurement is the inseam.

Disguising A Weak Chin For Men

,

Projecting confidence will help draw attention away from any perceived imperfections.

Some men feel that a strong jawline presents a more attractive or successful image than a narrow or receding chin. If you do not naturally possess a facial structure with a strong jawline or prominent chin, you can disguise a weak chin with a strategic use of facial hair or, in extreme cases, plastic surgery.

Full Beard

Growing a thick beard allows you more control over the apparent shape of your face. By sculpting your beard to make it longer at the chin, you can disguise a receding chin. Even a short beard or dark stubble can add definition to your face and reduce the visual effect of a weak chin. Light stubble, on the other hand, can actually worsen the appearance of a weak chin by creating a dingy look or reducing the definition of the edges of your face without adding a significant masking effect.

Sideburns and Chinstrap

According to career and image expert Lizandra Vega, short sideburns can balance out a receding chin, while long sideburns will emphasize the shortness of the face. A beard that follows the jawline without a mustache, known as a chinstrap, is as effective as a full beard for enhancing receding chins. For a narrow chin or sharply triangular jawline, long, thick sideburns or a chinstrap beard can help add bulk to the shape of your face and give you the ability to sculpt your jawline into a more balanced shape.

Goatee

If you do not want to grow or maintain a full beard but want to make your chin look more prominent, consider growing a goatee. A medium-length goatee can disguise a receding chin. Trim the goatee into a square or round shape rather than bringing it to a point, to help fill out the jaw and chin area. Goatees may be worn with or without a mustache. An extended goatee, which reaches past the chin to touch the edges of the jaw, can help mask a narrow chin.

Chin Advancement Surgery

In more extreme cases, a form of plastic surgery called chin advancement can alter your facial structure to bring a receding chin forward. Chin advancement surgery can give your face a more balanced appearance. During the procedure, the patient remains under general anesthesia while the surgeon removes a piece of bone from the tip of the jaw, moves it forward a predetermined amount and reattaches it to the jaw with wires or a small plate.

Tuxedo Ideas

,

You can wear an ascot instead of a traditional bow tie to personalize your tuxedo.

A lot of men cringe at the idea of wearing a suit because they see it as a uniform of sorts that must be worn to formal occasions. While the point of the tuxedo is to provide a standardized style of formal dress, a man can add a touch of personality to this sartorial staple. Remember that the tuxedo is only part of the ensemble and that the accessories that go with the tuxedo can be used as a means of self-expression.

Neck Wear

The bow tie is the tuxedo's most commonly associated form of neck wear. While some bow ties come pre-tied and simply clip on, these are commonly seen as a fashion faux pas. A tie that requires you to actually tie it yourself shows a splash of sophistication and exudes worldliness. Consider that the bow tie can be shaped widely like a butterfly, which is the most common, or the knot part can also be shaped narrowly like a cricket bat. Men may also choose to wear a traditional necktie for formal occasions, but it should always be silk and never wool or cotton-knit. An ascot can add a splash of old-world sophistication to any tuxedo.

Cummerbund Alternative

The iconic black cummerbund is not the only way to fashion your waistline when you wear a tuxedo. A vest, or as the British call it, a waist coat, adds a sophisticated look to your tuxedo. The vest can be a bright color if you want to be daring or you can go with a gray to add a subtle sense of fashion to your formal sartorial wear. Regardless of what you choose to wear, you must always remember that you must never leave your pants' waistline exposed.

Shirt Collar

The prototypical collar seen under most tuxedos in the United States is the wing collar. The wing collar has the visual appearance of a priest collar but with two triangular flaps that fold down over the neck wear. Men who desire a British look can elect to wear a spread collar with their tuxedo. The spread collar resembles a traditional dress shirt but with a wider distance between the collar's points. A mandarin collar, colloquially referred to as a priest collar, may also be worn with a tuxedo for a progressive look.

Metal Accessories

The traditional tuxedo should always be worn with cuff links and a stud set. These metal adornments to the formal sartorial dress are usually an understated metal with black onyx or mother of pearl inlay. However, you can add your own personal flavor to these accessories if the occasion calls for it. For industry-specific banquets you can wear stylized stud sets and cuff links with icons reflecting the your industry. Film producers may choose to wear metal accessories styled after movie cameras while an athlete may choose metal accessories reflecting his individual sport.

Tuxedo Hair Bow Instructions

,

Making your own bow with craft store ribbon means the color choices are endless.

Hair bows are a favorite accessory of young girls, but the cost of a bow to match every outfit can begin to add up. Making your own hair bows with inexpensive craft-store supplies allows you to save money and personalize the bow to suit your needs. You can choose ribbon colors to coordinate with a particular outfit or to support a sports team -- a popular choice among cheerleaders. The tuxedo hair bow is a classic style named for the elegant bow tie form it mimics.

Instructions

1. Cut your ribbon to approximately 8 inches. If you would like a bigger bow, cut a longer piece; for smaller bows, cut a shorter piece. To prevent the ends from fraying, quickly run the open flame from a lighter along each end.

2. Overlap the ends of the ribbon to create a big loop. Pinch the loop at the center to make the two smaller loops that form the bow. Wrap a small piece of floral wire (about 4 inches) tightly around the center to secure the bow shape.

3. Wrap the excess floral wire around the barrette or hair clip to attach it to the bow, making sure to leave the part of the clip that attaches to hair free of the wire. Cut any excess wire.

4. Cut a smaller piece of ribbon to approximately 3 inches in length. Cut down the width of this piece to approximately 2/3 inch.

5. Tie the smaller piece of ribbon into a simple knot. Hot glue the knot to the center of the bow. Wrap the ends around to the back of the bow and secure to the hair clip with hot glue, removing any excess ribbon.

Complaints With Curves Fitness Centers

,

When Curves first opened it doors in 1992, women flocked to the revolutionary 30-minute circuit workout held in a social, informal, women-only atmosphere. Since then, however, membership numbers have fallen and many Curves franchises have closed, due to several major complaints about the management of both Curves International and its individual franchises.

Inconvenient Hours

A big complaint about Curves is that many franchises are not open during lunch hours, and some are not open early in the morning or late in the evening, making working out inconvenient both for stay-at-home moms and women who work outside their homes.

Inadequate Workout

The 30-minute Curves workout has been criticized, both by members and non-members, for being too easy. In 2005 the American Council on Exercise (ACE) conducted its own test of the Curves workout and found that women who concentrated on their workout and put effort into it did indeed get a moderately intense workout. The ACE study also noted that if a woman didn't use the machines properly or was too involved in being social during her workout, her workout intensity suffered.

Lack of Innovation

In its heyday Curves provided an innovative workout and workout environment for all sorts of women but has failed to keep up with workout trends, including updating its equipment. Another complaint is that Curves has been too inflexible when it comes to adding group classes and other forms of exercise to the routine, making what its competitors have to offer more appealing.

Unknowledgeable Employees

Across the nation women have complained that Curves employees seem to know very little about the exercise machines used in the Curves circuit workout, and sometimes seem to know very little about exercise and fitness at all.

Ignoring Franchise Owners' Needs

An investigative article in the Wall Street Journal reports that Curves franchise owners are just as disgruntled as some Curves members when it comes to an unwillingness to stray from the original Curves model and offer more competitive exercise options to women. There have also been some complaints that franchise owners have been cheated out of profits, with some cases becoming public lawsuits.

Tuxedo Etiquette

,

The tuxedo follows a centuries-old tradition of dressing up after dark.

The tuxedo, simply a traditional English dinner coat, got its name when it first appeared in the U.S. at the Tuxedo Club, according to Emily Post's 1922 publication "Etiquette." The tuxedo survived the tumult of two world wars, economic depression and countless fashion fads to remain among the highest standards of formal wear. Many considerations determine when and wear a tuxedo.

Black Tie

Black tie dress code emphasizes formality and tradition. Your single- or double-breasted jackets should remain buttoned to highlight a slimmer figure and V-shaped torso. Pair it with trousers of the same material with no cuffs or belts. Both bow ties and long ties work with tuxedos, as long as they are plain black satin. Always include a vest or cummerbund. Your shoes must be black patent or highly polished pumps or oxfords. Accessories include black, gold or mother-of-pearl studs and cufflinks, and black or white silk suspenders. Consider a white silk handkerchief for a pocket square. A white or ivory jacket can replace black in tropical climates and for summertime events. Do not wear a trench coat with a tuxedo.

White Tie

The white tie and tailcoat represent the most formal fashion standard.

Even more illustrious is the white tie, or full dress, event, though they occur less frequently in modern society. According to The Black Tie Guide, the white tie ensemble closely follows everything used in black tie with the notable exception of the jacket. You need to wear a black wool double-breasted tailcoat unbuttoned with tails ending just behind your knees and a plain white bow tie. Black tie and white tie cover the two basic categories of formal evening wear.

Invitation

The invitation dictates the degree of formality and specifies if it is a black tie or white tie event. Look for this information in the lower right corner of the invitation. Hosts don't always designate the dress code and don't always expect guests to wear tuxedos. "Black tie optional" or "formal" invitations allow for a sold black tailored suit, with straight tie, in place of a tuxedo. When in doubt, go more formal. It's better to be overdressed than under.

Suitability

By strict definition evening wear should be worn only at events starting after 6 p.m. Weddings are an exception and the most common event requiring tuxedos, with groomsmen and attendants often wearing identical ensembles, including shoes, as chosen by the bride and groom. Whether the groom wears the same tuxedo as his groomsmen is an individual choice, although a more traditional wedding says they all should wear the same model. Proms, debutante balls, charity balls and formal dinners may require tuxedos as well. Again, let the invitation be your guide.

Summer Fashion False - Men Avoid

,
Summer is the season of holidays where you can sport bare minimum outfits if you challenge to display it. But men will be men!
In the garb of relaxed wear and loose fittings, they leave a room full of errors. From baggy cargos to barely-covering-your-feet flip-flops, they do it all. Well, until today! With the help of this record, you now know what should not be worn this summer.

1) Sweat Pants
It’s wet, hangs low on hip and not to ignore, definitely hideous! You should not require more factors to keep away from this crime-to-mankind item of outfits. Sweet Trousers should totally be used while you are jogging or in the confines of your room or maybe when you scheme out of your home to the nearby shop in case of an urgent. As well, you can keep these pants in corner of your clothing collection. Try- pure cotton or linen dhoti pants. That resolves all your objective.

2) Sagging Capris
Remember cargo pants, with large pockets that bow at sides cause in the shorts to sag? Yes, that. Prevent them. They dip below your knees, are shapeless and can make you look unattractive. We don't care how hot it gets; they will definitely not make you any cooler.

Try- shorts that tapers linearly and end an inches above your knees. Use khaki or linen shorts with just enough number of pockets.

3) Flip-Flops

2. Include any clothing that no longer fits instead of saving it in the hope that someday you will wear it. There is a perfect size four who needs those wool pants.

3. Go door to door in your neighborhood and collect socks and gloves without a mate that you can give to a shelter to put into unmatched pairs for residents to wear.

4. Donate any extra coats you have, since these are in especially great demand at shelters.

5. Wash items before you give them away, and check to be sure they are not stained or torn.

6. Include personal items such as sample-size shampoos, soaps and deodorant - stuff 'em in a stocking and put it in the giveaway bag.

7. Contact the shelter you want to help directly to find out if there are specific hours during which it accepts donations.

8. Check with a local religious organization, club or civic group to find out if it collects clothing for shelters. If so, you can leave the items there and have the organization deliver them for you.

9. Look for clothing collection boxes in stores, health clubs and other local businesses.

Pizzazz To Clothes

,

A well-placed patch can transform a boring shirt or pair of pants.

Few people can afford to shell out money to purchase a brand new wardrobe every time they get sick of their clothes and many people often get tired of their wardrobe after a few months. However, you can breathe new life into your clothes just by making simple decorative changes that will add instant pizzazz to each item. These small touches are so effective, your friends are likely to ask where you purchased your "new" items.

Instructions

Shirts and Blouses

1. Lay out each piece you'd like to alter in front of you. Mark areas on each piece where you'd like to apply rhinestones or metal studs, using a piece of chalk. For example, areas such as on the borders of collars, shoulder seams, hems, and around images and patterns are all good places to put studs.

2. Place your item flat and smooth on top of the base of your stud and rhinestone setting machine. Position a stud or rhinestone inside the empty space of the arm of the machine. Face the pointy end of the jewel stud downwards. Check to make sure you have the fabric of your clothing lined up as you want it to be.

3. Place both hands firmly on the top of the machine and press downwards, exerting enough force to push the stud or stone into the fabric, locking the pointy ends on around the fibers. Lift the arm and check your work. If you haven't firmly locked the stone or stud into the fabric, repeat this process once more.

4. Continue to insert rhinestones or metal studs into the fabric along your chalk lines.

Pants and Jeans

5. Lay all the pants and jeans that you'd like to update flat in front of you. Mark areas on the jeans where you'd like to add iron patches with chalk. Good places are the back pockets, the front pockets, along the side seams and by the cuffs.

6. Select your patches by going to a patch store and examining a wide variety: vintage, floral, music-related, foreign and political. Place your chosen patches on their chalk markings.

7. Iron the patches on over high heat. Once the patches have adhered firmly, insert a couple tight stitches around the perimeter to make sure each patch is secure.

Mount Miniature Medals

,

Full-sized medals are mounted differently than miniature medals.

Miniature medals, according to the ACU Army website, are intended as replicas of full-size medals. Worn for formal occasions, miniature medals are half the size of their full-size counterparts. The branch of the military for which the medal was awarded regulates the mounting of medals. Countries have different regulations on the order of mounted miniature medals. Consult with the country and military branch to determine the arrangement of miniature medals. Miniature medals can be swing-mounted, which means medals are on a mounting bar, also called a ribbon mount; or mounted for display in a shadow box.

Instructions

Mounting Miniature Medals on Mounting Bars

1. Twist the clutch backs onto the mounting bar pins if the backs have been removed from the mounting bar. Mounting bars have one or two clutch back pins on the back of the bar. If you try to mount your miniature medals on a bar with uncovered pins, the pins can snag the ribbons, also called ribands, of the medals. According to ACU Army, full-size medals are designed with a pin attached to the medal, but miniature medals have to be affixed to mounting bars. Mounting bars are available to hold from one to 12 miniature medals.

2. Consult the appropriate country and/or military branch to determine the order and arrangement of the miniature medals you are mounting. United States military branches for which miniature medals are awarded are: Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy and the Coast Guard. Handbooks are available from the appropriate military branch.

3. Slide the ribbon loop over the mounting bar in the order dictated by the regulations of the country and military branch that awarded the miniature medal. According to Heritage Medals, mounting miniature medals is referred to as swing mounting because the individual medals are slid onto the mounting bar and swing from the bar.

4. Twist the clutch back from the mounting bar pins and insert the pins through the cloth of the uniform. Attach the clutch backs over the pins over the interior uniform cloth by reaching inside the uniform. According to Heritage Medals, you should never wear medals on non-regulation uniforms because the fabric might rip under the weight of the bar and medals.

Mounting Miniature Medals in Shadow Boxes

5. Disassemble the shadow box according to the box's design.

6. Measure and cut the black-velvet-covered sponge to fit inside the shadow box. According to Precision Medals, black velvet is the best color choice to display mounted miniature medals because black reduces shadows and eliminates reflections. Medals and their ribbons stand out vibrantly against black. Black-velvet-lined sponge is available at craft and jewelry supply stores.

7. Insert the mounting bar pins through the velvet-lined sponge in the desired position. Twist the clutch backs onto the pins behind the sponge. Velvet-covered sponge intended for jewelry and presentations is firmer and won't sag under the weight of the bar and medals. According to Heritage Medals, always use acid-free supplies and make sure the products state they are colorfast to avoid fabric bleeding onto the medal ribbons.

8. Remove an adhesive gel circle from the protective backing and press it beneath the medal. Press the medal against the velvet-lined sponge. Medals may be allowed to swing unattached, but adhesive circles ensure the medals don't damage the other medals displayed together. Adhesive gel circles are sold under many brand names at craft and hobby stores and are very durable. The gel circles peel away from surfaces without damaging what they've been adhered to.

9. Insert the sponge with the mounted miniature medals into the shadow box. Reassemble the shadow box according to the box design.
