Suit jacket
or sports coat? It's easy to differentiate once you understand the variables.
The terms "sports coats" and "suit jackets" are often used interchangeably, but these articles of clothing actually differ in several ways. Over the years both were predominately worn by men, but suit jackets have become a more popular choice for women over the past three decades, while sports coats have not caught on to the same extent. The two options also differ in their overall appearance and formality.
History
The sports coat originated as leisure apparel, namely used for outdoor pursuits such as hunting. It had flap pockets, presumably to help hold ammunition. The suit jacket, as we know it today, evolved slowly in Europe from the 12th through the 14th centuries. By the 1800s, suits were a popular option among kings, princes and other consorts.
Fabrication
Sports coats are generally made with sturdy and textured materials such as tweed, wool, camel hair and corduroy. The buttons often contrast with the rest of the coat, and are made from horn, plastic, brass or nickel. Other embellishments may include patch pockets or elbows. On the other hand, a suit jacket typically has a smooth texture, and is made with a fabric like worsted wool. Buttons typically match the color of the suit in an attempt to blend in.
Colors and Prints
Suit jackets usually come in solid colors, with the exception of subtle patterns like a thin pinstripe, and in conservative shades such as black, navy or gray. This is because a suit jacket is made to match its suit pants, and head-to-toe plaid can be overpowering for the average consumer. Sports coats, however, do not have the same restrictions, and are therefore found in a variety of colors and patterns.
Fit
Considered more formal attire, suit jackets typically have fairly concise tailoring and are intended to be worn buttoned, usually with a tie. Because the sports coat was created as leisurewear, it has a looser fit to allow for more ease of motion.
Wear
A more formal office typically calls for suit jackets for men, and this is increasingly true for women as well. Suit jackets should be worn with their matching pants, as uneven wear and laundering will cause them to become slightly different shades. If you prefer to wear your suit jacket and pants separately, always launder them together, or consider buying blazer and pant separates and don't wear them together. Suit jackets also work well for formal occasions such as weddings and funerals. Sports coats are appropriate for more casual office environments and can be worn with jeans or trousers. Don't choose trousers that are too close to the same color of your jacket, as this can be distracting. Sports coats also may be worn for more casual events such as family reunions or a lunch date.
