Become A Cook'S Apprentice

Working as a cook's apprentice will allow you to gain valuable restaurant experience while learning to cook under the direction of an experienced chef. If you have a desire to work in the restaurant industry and aspire to become a cook, becoming a cook's apprentice will help you achieve your goals. You will gain knowledge and understanding of what goes on in a functioning commercial kitchen and you will come away from the experience with hands-on training that cannot be duplicated in a cooking school environment.


Instructions


1. Learn all you can about working as a cook in the restaurant industry. Remember that cooks often work long hours and are under tremendous pressure to keep the kitchen running smoothly. Ask yourself if you have what it takes to be successful in this line of work.


2. Study the art of cooking, including food preparation and presentation. Continue to study and learn about all aspects of cooking, even after completing a formal culinary arts program.


3. Gain experience in any avenue of the restaurant kitchen industry. Begin as a dishwasher if you must, just to get your foot in the door, and work your way up from there. Accept a job as an assistant, a food runner or a pre-apprentice so that you can watch and learn in the kitchen.


4. Develop a resume that lists your cooking experience and skills, any culinary classes you have taken, professional business skills, etc.


5. Look in the help wanted section of your local newspaper. Speak with an adviser at your culinary school and inquire about apprenticeship opportunities. Call potential employees and try to secure an interview.


6. Bring your resume with you to any interviews you land. Allow ample time to get there and arrive 15 minutes early. Wear professional attire and be prepared to explain your passion for cooking and what it is that you can offer the restaurant.


7. When you find a position, begin your first day prepared to learn. Bring a kitchen journal and take notes of pertinent information. Ask questions about anything you do not understand.


8. Always wear your designated uniform and work boots. Adhere to all regulations and safety guidelines.


9. Offer help to kitchen staff during idle times and in between tasks. Avoid standing around and doing nothing; there is always something to do in a kitchen. Keep busy.


10. Pay close attention as you work your way through the different stations in the kitchen. Decide which field most interests you, such as entrees or pastries.


11. Develop a relationship with other apprentices in your restaurant.


12. Keep looking for apprentice opportunities. Develop a network of people within the restaurant industry and stay on top of new restaurants and current job openings. Stay connected and stay informed.


13. Develop a relationship with other apprentices in your restaurant. Exchange cooking ideas, kitchen tips and industry-related information. Learn work together as a team and to rely on one another during busy times.
