Make A Dress Shirt Larger

,

Making simple alterations at home reduces the strain on wallet and waistline.

Tailoring items of clothing can be easy and yet appear a daunting task. Experienced individuals can make simple alterations at home either by using a sewing machine or by hand. Use a professional tailor to make complicated alterations to avoid damaging or ruining your clothing.

Instructions

1. Try on the shirt to be altered and determine which areas need to be let out.

2. Turn the shirt inside out and use the seam ripper to pull apart the seams of the area to be altered. Remove all of the thread from the open seam.

3. Line up the torn seams and pin them together to keep them aligned.

4. Thread your needle or load the appropriate thread into your sewing machine. Starting at the inner corner (or "armpit) of the shirt, using small stitches and starting close to the ripped seam, work your way toward the distal point (the point furthest away from the inner corner) of the adjustment area.

5. Lay a secondary stitch back toward the inner corner of the shirt and tie the thread off. Repeat this process with each area to be adjusted.

6. Remove the pins from the shirt and try it on. Repeat the above steps if necessary.
