Learning the proper ways to tie certain types of tie knots can save you time and trouble.
Tying a necktie takes practice, and with enough of it, you'll no longer need instructions. There are different kinds of knots, some for specific types of shirts, and some for all types of dressy shirts. Learning to tie a tie without running into trouble doesn't have to feel impossible anymore.
Instructions
Four in Hand Knot
1. Wrap the tie around your neck, under the shirt collar, with the wide end on the right. Pull the right end down so that it is about a foot below the skinny end of the tie on the left.
2. Cross the wide end of the wide end over the skinny end. Tuck the wide end underneath the narrow end and pull it through.
3. Bring the wide end back over the skinny end. Pull the wide end through the loop around the neck line.
4. Hold the front of the knot and with your other hand, and bring the wide end down through the loop.
5. Hold the skinny end and slide the knot up the shirt to tighten the tie The four in hand knot is best for button-down dress shirts.
Pratt Knot
6. Turn the tie inside out and wrap it around your neck, under your shirt collar. Pull the wide end down about a foot below the skinny end on the left.
7. Cross the wide end underneath the skinny end, and pull it again over and under the skinny end.
8. Pull the loop down to tighten it and take the wide end over to the right. Pull it up behind the loop.
9. Bring the wide end through the knot and tighten. The Pratt knot is suited for any type of dress shirt.
Half Windsor Knot
10. Place the tie around your neck, underneath the collar of your shirt. Keep the wide end on the right side, pulled down about a foot from the narrow end on the left.
11. Cross the wide end of the tie over the skinny end and bring it around and behind the narrow side.
12. Lift the wide end up and pull it through the loop and toward the right.
13. Bring it back around front, over the narrow end to the left. Bring the wide end through the loop again then through the knot in the front.
14. Tighten the knot with both hands by sliding it up to the collar. Half Windsor knots are also good for any type of dress shirt.
Windsor Knot
15. Wrap the tie around your neck with the wide side on the right. Pull the wide side down about a foot lower than the narrow end.
16. Pull the wide end of the tie over the skinny end. Bring the wide end through the loop and pull it back down.
17.Pull the wide end under the narrow end and toward the right. Slide it back through the loop and pull it back toward the right again. The tie should appear inside out at this point.
18. Bring the wide end across the front of the tie to the left. Bring the wide end through the loop yet again and then back through the knot in the tie.
19. Tighten the knot with both hands by sliding it toward the collar. Windsor knots go best with spread-collar dress shirts.
