Homemade Ways To Clean Tarnished Sterling Silver Jewelry

,

Sterling silver jewelry can tarnish due to sulfides in the air.

Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and other metals that are added to improve the silver's durability and strength. When your sterling silver jewelry tarnishes from oxidation, it can appear dull and gray. With a little preparation, you can make your own silver cleaner using products you already have in your home and bring out the shine and color of your sterling silver jewelry without spending money on packaged jewelry cleaner.

Instructions

1. Dampen a cloth with warm water, and wring it out. Apply 2 or 3 drops of dish detergent to the cloth.

2. Wipe the sterling silver jewelry with the cloth to remove light tarnish.

3. Rinse the jewelry with cool water to remove soap residue.

4. Buff the jewelry dry with a cloth, and inspect it for any remaining tarnish.

5. Stir one part water and three parts baking soda together in a bowl with a spoon.

6. Dampen the jewelry with water, and dip a damp cloth into the baking soda paste.

7. Wipe the tarnished jewelry with the cloth, adding more paste and turning the cloth as needed until the tarnish disappears.

8. Rinse the jewelry thoroughly with cool water, and buff it dry with a clean cloth.
