If you were a woman living in the 1880s it is a good bet your hairstyle would be slightly disheveled. Frizzy, curly hair was in vogue and hair was frequently loosely piled on top of the head. Bangs were ubiquitous. Men's hairstyles followed a different fashion in the late 19th century.
Bangs
Most women opted for bangs, which were often frizzy. In the late 1880s, bangs were worn long and frequently parted in the middle. Men parted their bangs this way as well.
Daytime
The hair fashion of the 1880s and earlier in the late 1870s was called the natural form period (1877 to 1882). During the day, a woman would wear her hair pulled up in the back, with her curly bangs parted in the middle. Another option was to wave the hair and part it in the center. The sides were pulled back into a low configuration at the nape of the neck.
Evening
In the evening, hair was curled and pulled back loosely and put into a chignon that was worn low . A jeweled or gold comb was placed atop the chignon and the bangs were short and curly. Another evening style featured the hair loosely pulled on top of the head and fixed in a knot. The bangs were curly but long.
Men
Men's hair was cut short and oiled so it lay flat on the head. Many men had walrus mustaches that were oiled just like their hair.
