1. Start looking at prom dresses. Look through stores, online catalogs, clothing catalogs and pattern books at fabric stores. This will give you a good idea of what elements you want in your own prom dress. Go to thrift and consignment stores and look for dresses that you like. They are very inexpensive, so it would not hurt to purchase the ones you like the best. You can use these as the pattern for your prom dress or utilize them as part of your prom dress.
2. Examine your sample dresses. Think about what you like about the dresses and what you don’t like. Consider how you would alter the dress to suit you. If you like the color and fabrics, take the dresses apart to use the part of the dress you like. For example, if you like the bodice of the dress and the skirt, but hate the sleeves and back, use a seam ripper to remove the parts of the dress that you don’t like.
3. Purchase fabric for your dress. If you have followed Step 3, you will have half a dress at this point. Bring a sample of the fabric with you and find a fabric that coordinates. If you are not going to use part of a previous dress, then choose a dress fabric that you like.
4. Purchase dress patterns. The dress pattern you purchase can be for then entire dress, or for a part of the dress. As you look through patterns and styles, look past the entire dress and instead look for parts of the dress that you like. Think about parts of the dress you can leave out of the design. Avoid buying patterns that look difficult to alter.
5. Make sketches of your dress using different parts of different patterns and of your existing dress. Take time to dream about the dress draw many different options. Your individual dress design will begin to emerge.
6. Have your dress made. If you are experienced at sewing, you can create your own dress. If not, check with friends, and family members for a tailor who will be flexible and work with you on your design ideas.
