Renting a tuxedo for the prom can be scary.
It's prom time, and there's nothing more hair-raising for guys than renting a tuxedo. For many, the prom is their initiation into the world of formal wear, and it can be intimidating and frustrating. There are a myriad of style choices, as well as all the strange accessories that go along with the suit, not to mention the infamous tux shirt, to consider. Armed with a little style advice and the right questions to ask, any young man headed to the prom should be able to get in and out of the tuxedo rental shop in one piece.
Tuxedo Style
Tuxedo styles vary depending on how much money you plan to spend. You usually can get a very basic tuxedo for $50 and designer tuxedos can run as high as $300. Work with the help at the formal wear shop and ask them to guide you through the process. The tuxedo should fit nicely and the trouser length should just graze the shoe.
All the Extras
Typically, a full tuxedo comes with a jacket, trousers, bow tie and cummerbund. It's important to make sure all of those things actually are included in your rental fee because not everyone follows this rule. Some shops may throw in a shirt and vest, while others may include only the basic tux. If you're not interested in any additional shopping, most shops will rent anything else you might need, like a shirt, shoes and cufflinks.
Bargains and Deals
Keep your eyes peeled for special deals and discounts on tuxedos. Prom season is a competitive time for formal wear rentals shops and they often want to get a jump on the business. Start looking for deals and coupons three months before prom season. If you know what you want, you may save a good percentage by renting your tuxedo on the early side.
