Sew Hospital Gowns
Hospital gowns are very basic coverings, and so sewing a hospital gown is very easy even for inexperienced or beginning sewers. In addition, with a little personalization hospital gowns can be excellent homemade gifts for anyone struggling with a chronic or terminal illness who must spend a lot of time in medical facilities or may have trouble dressing in normal clothes due to surgery or a debilitating condition.
Instructions
1. Lay the fabric out with the "right" side folded. Fold the T-shirt or nightgown in half and lay it on the fabric so that the folds are on the same side. Trace loosely around the T-shirt or nightgown, being sure to lengthen the piece appropriately for a gown.
2. Cut out the front gown piece you've just traced from the T-shirt or nightgown, leaving it folded.
3. Lay the folded front piece on the fabric--not on the fold--and trace around it. Then cut out the two back pieces you've just created.
4. Lay 1-inch strips of fusible interfacing along the "wrong" sides of the shoulders and sleeves of each gown piece, and fold the fabric over, sewing along both edges to secure the interfacing in place.
5. Starting at the neck side, sew 2-inch pieces of the soft side of velcro to the shoulders and sleeves of the front gown piece. Sew the scratchy 2-inch pieces of velcro to the corresponding places on the two back pieces of the gown.
6. Lay the front piece of the gown out flat, then pin the back pieces of the gown to the front piece along the side seams and the underside of the sleeves with the "right" sides together.
7. Sew the front piece and back pieces together along the sides, starting at the bottom of the gown and ending at the end of the sleeve, to make a 1/2-inch seam.
8. Hem the neckline, the back opening, the bottom of the gown, and the ends of the sleeves with a 1/2-inch hem.
9. Sew the ribbons onto each of the two back pieces at the neck and at the center, to create ties to hold the back of the gown together.
