Liturgical season
influences stole colors and decorations in many demoninations.
Stoles are symbols of Christian ordination worn by many clergymen during worship services and special ceremonies. Churches have different guidelines regarding style, color, embellishments and the degree of choice pastors have with regard to their "official" apparel. For many churches, liturgical season is a major factor in determining stole colors and decorations. Regardless, stoles come in many materials and styles, from simple to ornate, and they can add extra beauty and symbolic depth to a church service. You can find stole patterns in pattern catalogs as well as on-line, where you will also find guidelines for major denominations.
Instructions
1. Determine the yardage and fabric recommendations for your pattern. Select a fabric for the front, or main fabric. Choose a matching or coordinating fabric for the back or lining. Select an appropriate inter-lining, which you will place between the front and back to give the stole more body. Softer fabrics require a heavier inter-lining than tapestries and brocades.
2. Fold the main fabric in half lengthwise. Pin the pattern to the fabric, keeping it smooth and flat. Cut through both layers. Fold the lining in half and attach the pattern. Cut out the lining. Cut out two pieces of the inter-lining.
3. Embellish the stole with embroidery, applique or fringe before sewing it together. Any design that matches the liturgical season is appropriate.
4. Sew right and left sides together at the neck seam. Sew the lining and inter-lining neck seams. Press all seams flat.
5. Lay the front of the stole flat, wrong side up, and baste the inter-lining to the front fabric. Turn it over and pin the back fabric to the stole, right sides facing. Pin and baste all the way around the stole.
6. Sew along the seam allowance around the stole. Leave a 4-inch space that is not sewn on the inside edge. Remove the pins.
7. Snip around the curve of the neck. Make short cuts about 1/2-inch apart. Do not cut through the stitching. Trim the seam allowance at the bottom corners.
8. Turn the stole right-side-out through the opening. Slip-stitch the opening. Test the iron temperature on a scrap of front and back fabrics to determine the temperature setting of the iron before you press the stole. Smooth the edges and press the garment flat.
