Popular Flowers For Boutonnieres

Floral boutonnieres

While roses and carnations are the most popular boutonnieres, they need not be your first or only choice. The boutonniere trend going into the 21st century is more elaborate, with different concepts and design. Whether you are considering a boutonniere for the groom, wedding party, a prom or other formal event, choose color and design that complements any other flowers (corsages and bouquets) and attire worn.

Freesia

These aromatic funnel-shaped flowers are symbolic of innocence. Available in a multitude of shades (white, pink, yellow, lavender, mauve), the white freesia, combined with a touch of eucalyptus, is perfect for any event.

Stephanotis

These fragrant white star petal flowers are often used in bridal arrangements and complementing groom boutonnieres. Paired with dark greens and a bit of baby's breath, stephanotis makes the perfect aromatic, crisp, elegant groom boutonniere.

Roses

The classic single rose boutonniere will never go out of style. With a sprig of baby's breath, this boutonniere is timeless. Choose different colors to coordinate with any themed colors. Especially dramatic is the black rose; not really black but a deep red with dark edges, this rose, paired with the starkly contrasting green of lady's mantle, is eye-catching. Two-toned roses with hints of red can be accented with red berries for a different twist.

Calla Lilies

The elegant, single white flower calla lily is in a class of its own. Worn alone, with a simple leaf backdrop or accented with hypericum berries about the base, this boutonniere will make a sleek, contemporary statement.

Tulips

Tulip boutonnieres are perfect for spring attire. Combine one of the many colored tulips with bold, variegated greenery. Two-toned tulips with ripples of red or orange are striking with contrasting berry accents.

Cymbidium Orchid

These lush tropical-looking flowers have a number of hybrids in a tremendous range of color. Combine a miniature green cymbidium orchid with dark green leaves for an exotic statement.

Gerbera Daisy

The bold color and structure of the gerbera daisy says simplified elegance. This flower looks fabulous pinned alone on the lapel, or accented with berries for contrast. Available in dozens of colors, they are easy to match to any color theme.

Lily of the Vally

Sprigs of sweet, fragrant lily of the valley are wonderful for boutonnieres. Add small colorful berries or even fruit, like raspberries for a fun twist. Combine them with baby's breath, grape ivy leaves or ladies mantle to fill out the spray, or leave them simple and understated.

Herbs

Herb sprigs are a beautiful alternative to hybrid flowers and leafy foliage; they add fragrance as well. Consider selecting lavender, with purple fragrant flowers. To accent the lavender, tie rosemary, thyme or mint to give the boutonniere a more masculine edge.

Carnations

The ever popular carnation is inexpensive, easy to find and plentiful in color options. Tied with a simple ribbon, it can be played down for a less formal occasion; or flanked with contrasting rose buds, baby's breath and some variegated or grape ivy leaves, it can become more elaborate and dressy.
