Sewing A Twin Extra Long Quilt

,

College students need extra-long twin-sized quilts for dorm beds.

When your daughter heads off to college for the first time, you will need to help her acquire all the items necessary for living in a dorm. Bedding will be at the top of the list. But college beds are extra long and standard twin-sized quilts are not long enough to adequately cover the bed. If you can sew, you might want to make a twin-sized, extra long quilt. Not only will it fit the dorm bed better, but your child will have the comfort of your loving gift to sleep under.

Instructions

1. Choose a quilt pattern. Get your student in on the decision-making from the start of the project. If the quilt will be a surprise gift, choose a pattern and color scheme that you think your daughter would like. Patterns can be found in quilt books and magazines and on the Internet. Be sure to choose a pattern that will be large enough to fit an extra long twin bed -- 39-inches wide and 80-inches long. An extra long twin quilt with a 10-inch drop but without a pillow tuck should measure 59 inches-by-90 inches. You may choose to make the quilt larger to allow for a pillow tuck and more quilt to hang down the sides of the bed.

2. Buy the necessary fabrics and batting according to the chosen pattern and the desires of the recipient of the quilt. Fabric can be purchased at quilt shops, fabric stores or online. It's recommended you use 100 percent cotton fabric for quilts.

3. Prewash the fabrics to remove sizing. Wash colors separately in case colors bleed. Dry fabrics completely, then iron to remove wrinkles.

4. Cut fabrics using the rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat according to the directions included in the quilt pattern.

5. Sew the quilt pieces together according to pattern instructions to create the quilt top.

6. Sandwich the quilt. Lay out the fabric for the quilt back on a large table or floor space. Spread the batting smoothly on top of the backing. Cover the batting with the quilt top. Pin the three layers together using the quilting pins, beginning from the center and working outwardly in a circle. Be careful to smooth out the fabric to prevent wrinkles.

7. Quilt the sandwich. This can be done by hand-sewing small stitches, or by tying the quilt with yarn, or by machine quilting with a sewing machine.

8. Bind the edges of the quilt with a strip of fabric.

Clean Tarnished Silver Jewelry

,

Remove the tarnish from your silver jewelry with a few household items.

Cleaning tarnished silver jewelry is easy using items you probably already have in your home. It can be a chore to get your jewelry looking shiny and new again, but it is possible. Cleaning your jewelry with non-toxic home items is much better for you and just as efficient as the chemical jewelry cleaning solutions that retailers sell. You'll be surprised how common items can restore your tarnished silver jewelry to its former glory.

Instructions

1. Pour the salt and baking soda into the aluminum pan.

2. Cover the powders with some hot water.

3. Stir the mixture up to dissolve the salt and baking soda.

4. Place your jewelry into the solution and let it sit for a few minutes. Check it periodically and see if the tarnish is coming off. The aluminum causes a chemical reaction with the salt and baking soda called oxidation, which will restore the shine to your silver jewelry.

5. Dry your jewelry with a soft cloth.

Dos and Don'ts of Wearing a Shirt

,

Look around in any city, bar, or shopping mall, it has become clear that many men have not realized out how to put on a shirt correctly.

Listed below are easy Do's and Don'ts that will allow a man to be sure he is dressed properly, and with a little self-discipline and work, look excellent.

DO

# Insert your shirt into your pants while wearing a sport coat or blazer

# Slim-fit shirts if you are thin, have the customize take sides in on loose shirts

# Insert your shirt in at all times, except the bottom hem is straight and smaller than your hip bone, as is the case with many informal shirts.

# Make sure your shirt material enhances your tie. Sea Island shirt cotton is very light and performs best with genuine soft silk ties. A herringbone shirt weave is a distinctive style and excellent design that works best with a thicker weaved soft silk tie. Pima cotton is very light and portable and therefore is associated by lightweight soft silk, cotton and linen ties.

DON'T

# Wear a shirt deeper than your suit to work.

# Wear the wrong collar size. You will know you have chosen the right collar size while you can perfectly fit your index and middle fingers side by side between your neck and your collar.

# Clash your shirt and tie. Make sure that your shirt design is clearly different to that of your tie. A fine-stripe shirt looks excellent with a distinctive knit tie and a bold stripe shirt looks best with a dark colored tie. A check shirt looks excellent with a dark solid tie with a simple design.

# Ruin the look by wearing an unattractive collar. If you have a round face, wear a shirt with a point collar; if you have a narrow face, prefer a cutaway collar and if you have a long neck opt for a high-sitting collar.

Help For Men To Dress Well

,

Help for Men to Dress Well

It is a well known theory that some men go out looking as though they either got dressed in the dark or suffer from color blindness. Some men just do not have a flair for fashion. Indeed, sometimes it is not even about being fashionable but dressing with a little style, which can go a long way.

Smart Dress

For dinner parties, society functions or special occasions, smart dress is required. This type of attire usually consists of a suit and tie. Special functions may require top and tales with a white tie. Some social functions will require black tie.

Smart Casual

One golden rule of dressing is to never wear more than three colors. For example, with casual dressing choosing neutral colors of various shades works well. Dark trousers with a light plain shirt also look handsome. If you wish to wear a plaid shirt, wear plain trousers, not patterned.

Casual

Casual can be jeans, track suit bottoms, shorts or corduroys. The shirt would be a T-shirt or polo shirt, depending on where you are and what you are doing. Casual dress is not so precise as smart or smart casual. There are some rules of thumb that apply, such as not wearing socks with sandals, but some men just prefer to ignore that rule.

Match Ties & Sport Coats

,

Matching a tie to your sport coat brings your look together.

Sport coats are less formal than suit jackets and can be worn anything from dress pants to jeans. Sport coats look appropriate with and without a tie. It isn't mandatory that you wear a tie when you wear a sport coat, however, you can choose to do so and complete your look by matching your tie to your coat. The look you want to achieve is entirely up to you. Follow a few simple pieces of advice to create a dapper look.

Instructions

1. Choose a tie in the same color scheme as your sport coat. For example, if your coat is dark blue, choose a tie in the blue family in a lighter shade. Grey, black and navy sport coats go well with pink, black, blue, red, gold, burgundy, yellow and purple ties.

2. Pair a khaki or camel color sport coat with other shades of brown, rust, green, gold, garnet, yellow and red.

3. Opt for striped or solid color ties. If your sport coat features pin stripes, you can still wear a pattern tie; larger stripes and solid colors complement a pinstripe jacket.

Replace The Buckle On A Men'S Belt

,

Double-check and see if your belt can be fixed before tossing it.

Men's belt buckles can get rusty or worn down and need to be replaced every so often. There is a way to tell if you can replace tang buckles: look at where the belt folds back on itself. If there are snaps, you can usually pull them apart. If there is stitching on the fold of the belt, the buckle cannot be replaced. Clip-on buckles that are clamped onto belts made of tightly woven threads usually will slip off if pulled on hard enough.

Instructions

Tang Buckles

1. Pull apart snaps that hold the belt buckle in place. You may have to give it a bit of a tug, since some snaps are more stubborn than others.

2. Replace the old buckle with the new one and snap it back into place.

3. Pull on the buckle to make sure it will stay in place and that the snaps are securely fastened.

Clip-On Buckles

4. Remove the clip-on buckle by opening the clasp that holds the buckle in place and pulling it off the belt. The end of this type of belt is usually made up of frayed threads and will easily allow the removal to take place.

5. Thread the belt through the new buckle with the clasp still open. Make sure the belt goes directly under the clasp and pull a ¼ of an inch of the belt past the clasp for extra hold.

6. Close the clasp and pull on the buckle to make sure that it will stay securely on the belt.

Pick That Ideal Blue Jeans

,
“As I really like my blue jeans too much, I cannot see myself throwing it away.” Aww…isn’t that cute? NO! It definitely is not.

Blue JeansIt's recognized that you really like that traditional item of jeans of yours a lot and you are moreover emotionally attached to it. Though, it does not mean that you maintain “ragdo-fying” it. Come on. You are entitled to a new one that's great on design.

Except the greatest query is, “How to discover that perfect alternative for it?”

All you require to keep in mind is the following suggestions that are “the” features of a number of blue denims.

# They should fit and slimmer your body.

# They should be easy and classic. No quantity of elegant washes on your jeans can fulfill the beauty of a study, single tone jeans.

# The fit should be relaxed enough to make you to feel like you have possessed it permanently.

# Try sitting on your haunches and getting up twice when you try a new pair of denims. This’ll help you judge if the denims is relaxed or not.

# They should make you look and attractive.

# The key here is to discover a pair that cuts down at the butt and too makes you look long unless you are already a oversize!

# The length of the denims should be just suitable and by appropriate, we mean that they should be about 2-2.5 inches below your ankle so that they do not look like “my brother owned and I liked them and he grew higher so I took ownership of them”!

# There is no definite concept about your denims being a button fly or a zip fly. That is completely up to you.. it’s about your comfort.

,

Get taller very simply

Want to know get taller? Many people want to get taller, and no matter what your age, many can increase height even after puberty. 3. Drink enough water the right way to get taller. Drink six cups of pure water (100 pounds or less) to eight cups of water (more than 100 pounds) to fill the fluid sacks in the spine's disks, which are 90% water, and shrink when dehydrated. It won't work to drink more soda pop or beer to increase height. Drink pure water on an empty stomach. At first you'll find yourself needing to use the restroom more often. But little by little, your cells and disks will plump up and absorb the water into their structures, and your body will become accustomed to this amount and help you get taller.

4. Sleep on your back to get taller and stay that way. When we sleep on our stomach, chiropractors report that we compress our spines. Sleep on your back to better allow the disks to act like sponges and soak up the extra water you're providing them to help increase height.

The Perfect Suit for You

,
Men come in all forms and sizes - skinny, tall, fat, short - and all of them have a query on their thoughts every morning, “What kind of outfits should I wear?” And when it comes to matches, the misunderstandings further gets worse, as it is difficult to discover an ideal fit. For each body-type, there are special guidelines. Study on:

Short-Heighted Men
Challenges: Well, they are short, and that more or less is the task. Short legs make the best trousers flop in a very uncomfortable way. There is misunderstandings over the length of lapel to flaunt.

Solution: Whether or not you admit it, nothing would seem to be better on you than short-length suits. The cuffs will further give an indicated overall look to your arms. Possibly you have not noticed it until now, but being beltless will make you look taller. It goes without saying that you buy a pant that fits. As well, wear shoes that are thin.

Tall Men
Challenges: One would often see taller men getting over striving - oversized suits, lengthy trousers, ties that are too slender. More than making you look elaborate, they make you look feeble.

Solution: You are endowed with an great height, carry yourself with panache. Go for light colors if you have a slimmer form. The superlative you would look in is a two-buttoned fit is with a tie with some additional width. Do not display too much cuff. Pointed shoes on long legs? Well, no! Rounded shoes are most suggested for lanky men.

Broad-Shaped Men
Challenges: Nearly impossible to discover outfits that fit the neck plus body? The trousers are warn too excellent, and obviously so. If overweight men do not use the ‘right suit’, it gives them a very poor overall look.

Solution: First and foremost, wear a coat with square pockets. This will help you divert the onlooker’s eyes to your chest, instead of your tummy. You should select simple shirts, as chequered shirts would least likely look excellent on you. While it comes to shoes, select a pair with a significantly bigger and more solid sole.

Men With A Good Built
Challenges: Oh yeah, don’t live in a misconception that durable men look excellent in whatever they wear. The fact that they have wide shoulder area, the shirts that fit them well end up falling short on their stem. This often encourages them to buy large ones.

Solution: Buy low collar thin shirts if you do not want them to look uncomfortable on your chest. Go for jackets with two buttons. Just like somebody with a bigger size, well-built men must as well use solid shoes.

Finding suits that fit your personality is not difficult if a proper thought goes into buying them. Dressing awesome is a mixture of lot of factors, be sure you get most of them right. More than anything else, make sure you sport a smile to add to the appeal of the attire!

The Best Ways To Get Rid Of Cold Sores

,

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are the result of a form of herpes virus and, as a virus, must be allowed to run their course. You often will feel a cold sore coming on a couple days before the actual blister appears, usually on the skin around the mouth. Eventually, the blister pops, oozes, crusts over and heals with no scarring. You can't cure cold sores, but you can speed up the recovery process.

Leave It Alone

Fight the urge to pick, squeeze or pinch the cold sore. Cold sores will heal relatively quickly on their own (within one to two weeks) without leaving a trace, and picking at them may slow down the healing process and potentially cause scarring. Leave well enough alone and let nature run its course.

Cold and Warm Compresses

Applying ice to the cold sore is an effective remedy for relieving pain. Try rubbing or holding ice on the cold sore for a few minutes, repeating once an hour for a longer-lasting effect.

You can find similar pain relief by applying a warm compress in the same manner as ice. You could use a warm tea bag instead of a compress, held on for roughly 30 minutes at a time.

OTC Medications

Over-the-counter medications also can provide relief from the pain caused by a cold sore. You can use ointments--the most effective contain topical lidocaine or benzyl alcohol--or oral tablets such as aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

Alternative Remedies

Conventional treatments aside, you can try different alternative remedies, too. Ask your doctor's opinion on applying witch hazel for pain relief. Rubbing aloe vera gel or oil on the cold sore is another option. Some have found lemon balm extract helpful in minimizing symptoms and speeding healing.

Prevent

Preventing a cold sore from developing is, perhaps, the best way to combat the problem. Beware of what triggers your sores, and take proper precautions. Common triggers include stress, lack of sleep, overexposure to the sun without sunscreen, illness, hormone changes, cosmetic surgeries, dental work or mouth injury. Since cold sores are spread virally, avoid kissing or other forms of skin contact when cold sores are present. Keep your hands washed, avoid sharing lip balms, towels and eating utensils, and use caution when touching other areas of your body, especially the eyes and genital area, as these are highly susceptible to the spreading of the virus.

Dr. Martens

,

The Dr. Martens “Made in England” products are manufactured in the Cobbs Lane factory, Wollaston, England which has been making footwear for the Griggs family since 1901. It is the home of the original Dr. Martens boot and within this small factory works a close knit team of people schooled in traditional shoe making and the unique process that makes Dr. Martens like no other shoe on earth.

This is the factory where it all began; where the first pair of Dr. Martens boots rolled off the production line on April 1st 1960. The manufacturing process has been fine tuned and perfected ever since from the cutting of the leather hides to the heat sealing with a blade of fire that welds the air cushioned sole to the upper.

This is first time for everything and for many people their first pair of Dr. Martens is a memorable moment in time, an opening statement of rebellious self-expression and creativity. Over the past 50 years Dr. Martens boots and shoes haven’t changed the original styles are still simple, versatile, functional and stylish all at the same time.

Dr. Martens air-cushioned sole, designed by German inventor, Dr. Klaus Martens, was engineered primarily to meet the specific need of providing additional support and comfort for his broken foot.

The Dr. Martens boot, manufactured by R Griggs and Co, British boot makers, with its trademark yellow stitch, grooved sole and heel-loop, was a boot for workers; comfortable, durable and lightweight in comparison to its competitors at the time.

Initially worn by postmen, policemen and everyday workers, the boots were adopted, customized and used across decade after decade, as a tribal emblem by successive subcultures, each twisting and subverting the boots and shoes to meet their own individual identity.

In 2003 Dr. Martens was forced to stave off bankruptcy by closing all of its factories except the original Cobbs Lane factory. The hope was that, one day; this factory could manufacture small runs, one-offs or customized boots and shoes for those prepared to pay the extra cost of being “Made in England”.

In 2011 this small factory is ready to grow once again and Dr. Martens is looking to expand its UK capacity to 70,000 pairs of boots and shoes a year, sourcing components locally wherever possible to ensure that the “Made in England” range remains true to Dr. Martens authentic heritage. With this expansion comes the possibility of recruiting and training new workers, both young and old, to keep shoe making skills, in general, and Dr Martens know how, in particular, alive in Northamptonshire.
These same craftsmen also travel the world to ensure that all Dr. Martens products wherever they are manufactured are made not only using the right methods but also respecting the art of industrial manufacturing.

Fashion Etiquette For A Formal Party

,

Black tie for a party.

When you're invited to a formal party, showing up in the wrong type of outfit can be most embarrassing---for your hosts, as well as for you. Different types of formal events have specific fashion requirements, and it is important to know just what kind of event you'll be attending. The fashion rules are simple, though, so once you know the basics, you can be sure to show up in the correct attire.

What Does the Invitation Say?

Different kinds of formal parties call for different suit types, tie colors, dress lengths and other details, so it is very important to pay attention to what is stated on the invitation. If you are unsure about whether or not an event is a formal one, contact the host or hostess and ask.

White Tie

A white-tie event is the most dressy of formal parties. It requires that a man wear a black tailcoat suit, white vest, white wing-collared shirt, white bow tie and white or gray gloves. His shoes should be shiny black or patent leather and worn with black dress socks. A woman should wear a floor-length evening gown.

Black Tie

While a black-tie event is still rather fancy, it is slightly less so than a white-tie affair. A black-tie event requires that a man wear a tuxedo, a black bow tie, a matching vest or cummerbund and black shoes with black dress socks. Suspenders are optional, in order to ensure a better fit. A woman may wear a long evening gown or short cocktail dress to a black-tie event.

Black Tie Optional

As the name suggests, black-tie-optional events give guests the option to wear different kinds of formal wear. Women may wear a long evening dress, short cocktail dress or dressy separates. Men may choose to wear a tuxedo, as they would to a black-tie event, or a dark suit with a white shirt and dark tie.

Semiformal

This type of event is the least rigid of formal occasions, and the fashion etiquette is a bit more relaxed. A semiformal party calls for a short cocktail dress or a long dressy skirt and top for women. Men should wear a dark business suit, white shirt, tie and dark dress shoes.

,
Although the best way to look intelligent is to hit the gym and get back in shape, busy schedules plans usually to play the spoiler each time. So, you can be a bit particular while selecting your outfit and, so, cover up that undesirable excess body weight.

Dressing Tips

Solid Colors
If shiny and noisy colors are your preferred, then you must get rid of them as soon as potential. The more vivid shades will create you look like tomato or potato. The long silhouettes in overcoats and coats can improve your dressing sense considerably.

Avoid Low-waist Jeans
As you have a bigger structure, it is apparent that your derriere must also be considerably heavy. It is important that your tight denims or pants do not yell, “I've big Buttocks”. Then, fashion gurus suggest dressed in low rise bottoms as they fit at your waist line and make you look sober.

Keep Your Pockets Light
You'd most likely be holding lots of your own weight so why would you desire to magnify by holding more weight in your pockets. You should refrain from holding things in your pockets which can make you seem to be loose.

Avoid Heavy and Double-buttoned Blazers

You want to make sure to clean out those hairy brushes, which are breeding grounds for germs and old residue — things no one wants in their hair. "Remove the hair from the brush after each styling session,"

 2. Using a rough elastic

The best type of elastic to use in your hair is something covered in fabric — a dense, thin hair tie can irritate your strands causing breakage if pulled to tightly. If you just want to get your hair out of your face, try gently pulling it back using bobby pins or claws. Anything too tight is damaging, so try to think loose.

3. Infusing hair with too many chemicals

Too many artificial chemicals are bad for any part of your body — and your hair is no exception. Too much coloring, keratin-ing, and relaxing can cause breakage and damage. Make sure you keep the number of chemical processes to a minimum, and consider establishing a routine that involves preemptive care before undergoing chemical treatments, like a scalp mask or an elasticizer — a pre-shampoo protective treatment — a couple days prior to visiting the hairdresser.

4. Setting the heat too high

Excess heat strips hair of its natural moisture, causing your cuticles to dry and snap off — leading to some thirsty-looking strands. That's why we're told not to turn the heat all the way up on our styling tools, but how do you know how hot is too hot? To start, don't turn the dial above "medium."

5. Going too long between haircuts

While picking split ends might be a great procrastinating tool, it's also a wake-up call that you're due for a trim. Over time, split ends tend to divide into even bigger split ends, causing your hair to thin and weaken. To keep hair looking healthy — and whole — try cutting 1/2-inch off your ends every month, or every other month if you're trying to grow hair long.

6. Brushing from the roots down

Brushing your locks from top to bottom can cause snags and breakage. To go about it in a gentler way, divide your hair into three-to-four-inch sections and smooth from the bottom up. To do this, grab hair a few inches from the bottom, and brush down from where your hand is. Move your hand up a few inches and repeat the process until you get to the roots.

7. Handling wet hair roughly

When hair is wet, cuticle scales can lift, making moist strands more delicate and more susceptible to breakage and split ends than dry hair. Make sure you always smooth damp hair with a wide-tooth comb. using a brush or narrow-tooth comb can be too rough because it pulls too harshly causing snaps and breakage.

8. Slathering on too many products

The last things you want to do are cause build-up and strip your hair of its natural oils. If you have fine hair, your locks will end up weighed down, creating the opposite effect of what you're trying to achieve. On natural hair, too many products can create dry strands by over-coating the cuticle and preventing moisturizing serums from getting to the center. And while thicker hair takes to products a bit better, start with less product than you think you need, building up if that amount isn't doing the trick.

9. Keeping the same shampoo for changing hair

Most women seem to think that they need to routinely switch their shampoo in order to keep locks from building up a tolerance to product. Not true, says Phillips. "Change your shampoo when hair circumstances change, for example, if color or highlights have been added." Additionally, many women tend to experience some type of hair loss during pregnancy.
