The boutonniere is normally one flower pinned to the left lapel of a jacket.
A boutonniere is a floral accessory to men's formal wear, typically used for special events such as weddings and formal dances. Normally, a boutonniere consists of a single flower bud worn on the left lapel of a coat or jacket, inserted through the buttonhole if present. However, in the absence of an appropriate buttonhole, the boutonniere should be pinned by the gentleman's companion before departing.
Instructions
1. Hold the boutonniere with one hand so that the flower is facing outward -- away from the man.
2. Position the boutonniere with one hand approximately 4 inches from the top of the left shoulder on the lapel, at a slight angle and centered.
3. Lift the lapel with the same hand holding the flower without releasing the boutonniere.
4. Insert the pin from behind the lapel with your free hand until the point comes out on the left side of the flower stem and any wire holding the boutonniere together.
5. Push the point of the pin into the flower's stem and push out the other side.
6. Insert the point of the pin back into the cloth of the lapel.
