Metro Hairstyles

,

Some women see the metrosexual as able to share their interests.

The term "metrosexual" (sometimes called "metro" for short), first coined by Mark Simpson in an article titled "Here Come the Mirror Men," describes often upper-middle class men with impeccable fashion sense and a somewhat feminine sensitivity. Some women find the cleanliness of metro-style haircuts very attractive, so these styles are becoming more popular among men. (See Reference 1)

Buzz Cut

Both Brad Pitt and David Beckham, known for their fashion sense and seeming gentleness with women, have sported the buzzed haircut. However, stylists often don't perform the buzz cut with traditional clippers but instead use a cutting technique called "scissors over comb" or "tapering." This technique allows barbers and hairstylists the ability to create an even cut close to the scalp. (References 3)

Best paired with a button-down shirt and a jacket, the buzz cut often looks too sloppy or military with a T-shirt and jeans.

Messy With Bangs

Jake Gyllenhaal and Zac Efron are known for their metrosexuality, and both are often seen sporting a slightly messy retro-style cut with bangs. The bangs on both of these men are cut to the side instead of being bluntly cut across the forehead; they blend in to one side of the hair. The bangs in the front are quite long, but are swept over or right above one of the eyes.

This type of style is a little easier to pair with relaxed outfits. The amount of time that it takes to make this look counters the ease of the outfit.

Pushed Back

Orlando Bloom, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Seacrest are all listed among StarPulses top 10 metrosexual celebrities. (See Reference 2) All three of these men are known for pushing their hair off their face, despite the length. Keeping the hair off of the face often presents a cleaner look and allows attention to be focused on the features of the face.

When pushing back the hair, metrosexuals will often use pomade or a light hold hairspray to hold the hair in place. Because the hair near the front of the face often tries to fall on the forehead, some amount of blow drying is needed while the hair is still wet.
