Scarf
A scarf can brighten an outfit with its simplicity, boldness or drama, but wrapping a square scarf can be quite the challenge, as it is not as simple as draping a regular winter scarf with its length and elegance. There are several ways to tie a square scarf, some which are more formal than others. While some approaches might work better with some fabrics than with others, tying a square scarf is something everyone can experiment with for striking results.
Instructions
The Simple Approach
1. Unfold the scarf, so it lies flat. The scarf can be of any fabric. However, silk can be quite difficult to fold because of its smooth surface. Fold the square scarf diagonally. To do this, pick any corner and carry it to the opposite corner. The square scarf should now be a large triangle. The two ends of the long fold are the ends by which the scarf will be tied.
2. Hold the triangle up, letting the pointy side hang downwards in front of the body. This should result in a horizontal line at eye level. Wrap the scarf around the neck and tie a knot in back. Letting the scarf hang loosely on the body is not only more casual, but can have a more dramatic impact if the scarf has bright colors, patterns or prints.
3. Tighten the scarf for a more formal look. To tighten the scarf to fit around the neck, cross the ends in back and then bring them around to the front, to tie the knot in front of the neck instead of behind the neck. The puffed up scarf in the front should be able to cover up the knot. Make sure the scarf is not tightened too much.
The Bow Tie Effect
4. Fold the scarf into a triangle by grabbing one corner and bringing it to the opposite corner.
5. Roll the scarf, starting from the long side and working towards the pointy end of the triangle. This might be quite difficult with a silk scarf, as it can slide. Make sure the roll is about 1 to 2 cm in width to avoid a rope-like appearance.
6. Wrap the roll around the neck and tie a quick knot for the bow tie effect. Make sure the ends of the knot look delicate and smooth to counterbalance the knot.
