The pickup camper cap does not affect vehicle performance.
Turning your truck cap into a camper is a single day job. The job requires basic tools and lumber but when completed you will have a comfortable bed and storage space. Several different building styles are available, with advanced modifications being a possibility in large truck beds. The truck cap is ideal for creating a dry area and high top caps provide extra head space for tall people. Building the camper is much cheaper than buying a camper and it does not affect the performance of the vehicle.
Instructions
1. Open the camper cap and the tailgate. Remove all items from the interior and sweep out any debris. Measure the length and width of the truck bed. Measure the height of the truck bedding stopping just below the lip created by the meeting of the truck bed and camper cap.
2. Build two rectangular benches to match the length of the bed, height of the bed and one third of the width measurement. Use 2-by-4 lumber and three inch wood screws to build a rectangular base with five vertical supports along each long side.
3. Cover the bench with 1/2 inch plywood and use one inch wood screws to connect the plywood. Leave a one inch lip on the inside of each bench. Slide the benches into the bed of the truck, leaving an aisle on the inside.
4. Measure the the width of the aisle including the lip on each bench. Cut three pieces of 1/2 inch plywood to match the latter width measurement and the length of the benches. Place the plywood on benches to cover the center isle and create a bed. Remove the plywood to expose the aisle and the storage area beneath the benches
5. Use a razor to cut individual sections of foam padding to match the benches and each piece of plywood in the center aisle. Cover the foam on the benches with a bed sheet and secure it with a staple gun. Leave the foam on the center aisle exposed to make easy adjustments while camping.
