Outfits For Women In The 80s

,

Neon shades were a must in the 1980s.

Every decade is marked by unmistakable fashion choices, and the 1980s is no exception. The "big hair" decade featured a number of memorable fashion looks for women. Whether you simply want to reminisce about 1980s attire or plan a costume for a theme party, yconsider many 1980s-specific looks for women.

Power Suit

Every business woman -- or aspiring business woman -- in the 1980s had a power suit in her closet. Perhaps inspired by the 1988 film "Working Girl," women across the country donned business suits in bold colors, such as red. The blazers featured shoulder pads, which were a staple of 1980s fashion. The 1980s business woman paired her power suit with pantyhose and high heels. Of course, if she walked to work, she might have traded those heels for tennis shoes for part of the day.

Neon Shades

Women's 1980s fashion included bright colors -- sometimes even blinding shades. T-shirts and tops in neon shades like hot pink, yellow, green and orange were popular, not to mention fashionable, looks during this decade. Neon colors infiltrated every part of a woman's fashion during the 1980s, down to the accessories. Many women wore neon scrunchies in their hair along with a pair of neon sunglasses to accent a neon t-shirt. Neon tights and socks were popular as well.

Workout Gear

Actress-turned-fitness guru Jane Fonda is credited with the workout craze that impacted 1980s fashion. Neon leotards paired with tights, legwarmers and high-top tennis shoes were a hot look for women while they exercised. The theory of the brighter, the better certainly impacted athletic fashion during this decade. High-waisted -- or even thong -- leotards paired with tights were a risky but popular fashion choice for the 1980s woman at her aerobics class.

Stonewashed Jeans

Denim is one of the few trends that spans from decade to decade, but the way women wear denim varies widely. In the 1980s, stonewashed jeans were all the rage. These light-colored jeans were often high-waisted but slim at the ankles, a clear reaction to the more popular flare and bell-bottom jeans of the previous decade. Women often wore all-denim looks, pairing their stonewashed jeans with matching denim jackets.
