Choose Clothes for Jazz Dancing

When you get ready to choose your clothes for jazz dancing or your jazz class, you can't just show up in your jeans and flip flops. Jazz dancing is a workout, so you have to dress the part.

Instructions

1. Ask the instructor or dance director for a list of required attire for your jazz dance classes, so that you do not buy clothing that you will not be able to wear. Some instructors may be very strict about the colors, materials, brands and styles that they accept as attire for jazz in their class. Many times, it gives a uniform look to the group and makes it easier to stop a dancer doing a movement incorrectly.

2. Wear clothing that stretches and gives at every angle, such as lycra or spandex. Most jazz pants are a pull-on style of stretchy pants that cling to the dancer's body. Wear the jazz pants over a leotard or tight form-fitting top.

3. Cover your dance attire with layers of dance sweaters, leggings or wraps. The leggings are actually a dance thing and not an "80s" thing. The purpose of these coverings is to warm up the dancer's body and muscles. It's very important to keep the muscles warm to avoid injuries while jazz dancing.

4. Walk into the dance studio or theatre in your street shoes and then change to your dance shoes. Do not wear your dance shoes on the street. Jazz dancing shoe styles will depend upon instructor requirements to personal preference. A standard jazz shoe is a soft leather shoe with a soft flexible sole. Styles will vary with split soles, slip-on or lace-up. Some selections of jazz shoes resemble a soft sole sneaker.
