Design Semiformal Wear For Men

,

Semi-formal attire for cocktail parties allows you to express your style.

Although certain events require the traditional men's tuxedo, dressing with a semi-formal wardrobe for special occasions is also acceptable. The dark suit is the classic attire for events such as weddings, cocktail parties, theater and red carpet award ceremonies. Even though daytime occasions like garden and beach weddings are designed with casual wear in mind, invitations will generally express what type of attire is required. By sketching different versions of each style category, the designer is able to narrow down the fabric and trim selection prior to construction and production.

Instructions

1. Separate the different categories for your semi-formal collection such as daytime, evening, semi-formal events or cocktail. For instance, daytime occasions will often include white dinner jackets and pants while other daytime events require gray morning coats.

2. Sketch your categories in your sketch pad by dividing the garment types, such as jackets, shirts and pants as well as necktie accessories. Sketch a minimum of five to seven versions per each category with a medium felt-tip pen to define the lines. For example, include jacket with lapel versions mixed with winged- or band-collar button front shirts for no-tie events. Cutaway coats, referred to as morning coats, are usually accompanied with a double-breasted vest and ascot. Certain styles of complementary trousers include military influenced grosgrain or satin side taping and do not include belt loops.

3. Choose the fabric for the semi-formal designs such as wool blends, gabardines or cashmere by working with fabric swatches during the design process. Keep the season in mind when selecting fabric weights. Although linen and seersucker are used in men's suits, the fabric is too casual for semi-formal events.

4. Choose patterns such as pin-stripes for suit shells or linings. Colors like black, navy blue and gray are common as well as combinations such as white with silver trim. Although men will wear dark colors to cocktail parties, these gatherings usually include a bit more flair depending on the venue. For example, for trendy Los Angeles, Miami or New York lounges, the wearer's personality should show through the attire such as a velvet jacket with satin trims. Add whimsy to your cocktail semi-formal designs.

5. Color in your drawings with markers or watercolor pens to create your fabric textures, colors as well as pin-stripe patterns. Include accessories like matching pocket squares, boutonnieres and cuff links while coloring in the sketches. This will give you an overall view of your designs and coordinating ensembles prior to the construction process.
