The Jazz Age & Music

,

Jazz music was developed in New Orleans, Louisiana in the early 1900s.

Jazz music, developed in the early 1900s in New Orleans, Louisiana, became immensely popular throughout the United States in the 1920s. Because of this, the '20s, a time of great social transition, is often called "The Jazz Age."

Origin and Description of Jazz Music

Early jazz music is now known as Traditional Jazz. This refers to the music recorded and played live predominantly in New Orleans and Chicago between 1900 till the end of the 1920s. Jazz music features prominent improvisation, syncopated rhythm and strong meter.

Jazz Age Musicians

Trumpet player Buddy Bolden and pianist/composer Jelly Roll Morton, both of New Orleans, are thought of as the originators of jazz music, while the first jazz recording was cut by The Original Dixieland Jass Band in 1917. Louis Armstrong, another New Orleans musician, began his career in Chicago in the '20s. Armstrong introduced the soloist aspect to jazz music.

Music Industry and Societal Changes

The independent record label was born in the 1920s and wasn't afraid of taking a chance on music the major labels shied away from, including jazz. The phonograph record and movies with sound provided new vehicles for jazz as well. Women's fashion became more risque, prohibition actually increased drinking as a pastime and the business world flourished.
