Rolex style watch
Rolex's status as one of the most recognizable luxury brands in the world often draws imitation. Determining the authenticity of a Rolex watch can be difficult, as modern production techniques have made counterfeit Rolex watches more similar to the original models. A few simple rules can help you avoid fakes--but the only certain way is to purchase from an authorized dealer.
History
Know the background of the watch. When a Rolex is sold, a set of papers is included to show warranty information, internal specifications and proof of purchase. As a Rolex watch is a very expensive piece, it is rare that the watches are separated from their papers, and a watch without papers is much harder to verify.
Features
Understanding the specific features to look for in each Rolex model can help determine if a watch is fake.
All Rolex second hands will tick in tiny, sweeping movements--often appearing to roll. If a Rolex second hand ticks once a second, it is a fake.
The printing on the dial should be crisp--not double printed or otherwise smudged.
The watch should never have a display back that shows the internal parts, as no modern Rolex has been manufactured with one.
The Rolex should also have original serial numbers, either under the band or on the case. These can be confirmed at your local Rolex dealer.
Size
The size of the watch is also important. When a Rolex is manufactured, it is made to incredibly tight specifications. Rolex does not allow for deviation in sizing or materials within Rolex watches, so even a small deviation from normal sizing indicates a fake. A good resource to find the proper dimensions for a Rolex watch is the Rolex Forums, which has been included in the Resources section below.
Considerations
Consider the source and price of the Rolex. A fake Rolex will usually be priced significantly below the typical market value, helping the watch sell faster. Check online for previous sales of similar watches, to check if the price is considerably lower. Checking the source is often not an option, but knowing who you are buying from is the best way to avoid purchasing a counterfeit.
Expert Insight
While simple observation can tell many fakes, some fakes can be challenging to spot. If possible, ask an expert. If not, check some of the things the experts check. A new Rolex always has a holographic sticker on the back with the watch reference number. If you are purchasing a Submariner, Sea-Dweller or Daytona, the screw-down crown will contain a tiny rubber gasket at the base. If you have the tools, the back of the watch can be removed and compared with a picture of the internals in a real Rolex.
