Tailoring A Suit Down A Size

,

A suit you tailor yourself might not be as sturdy as one made by a professional, but it should be comfortable.

Whether you've recently lost weight, or brought a suit home and discovered it's slightly too big, you many need to tailor it down a size. This process can be expensive and may require more time than you have. However, If you're handy with a needle, you can do it yourself. It may take some time and practice, but with patience and a steady, you can master this skill and ensure that your suit fits you perfectly.

Instructions

1. Use a seam ripper to remove the stitching from both of the jacket sleeves and set the sleeves to one side. Be careful not to damage the fabric of the jacket while you are doing this.

2. Iron the sleeves individually so they are not wrinkled when you sew them back into your jacket. Measure the sleeves and use a fabric marker to mark exactly one inch above the original stitching.

3. Sew the sleeves back onto the jacket from the mark you've made. Use new stitching that is the same color and size as the original to maintain consistency.

4. Remove the stitching on the hem of your pants. Iron them thoroughly and mark them one inch higher than the previous hem length.

5. Fold the hem over so that it falls down one inch lower than it did before. This will likely mean that your hem will be slightly larger than it was originally.

6. Sew the new hem closed. Follow the original stitching where possible.

7. Try on your new suit and see if it fits better. Although you have successfully tailored your suit down a size, it may still be too loose. If this is the case, you will need to visit a tailor to have it adjusted further.
