For male actors and fathers, finding the right wardrobe for a photo shoot is important.
Finding the right wardrobe to wear for a photo shoot largely depends on what sort of pictures you need taken. For example, actors need headshots and portfolio pictures, while fathers might want a family portrait. No matter what the occasion for the picture, some professional photographers have preferences and tips on what to wear to the shoot.
Purpose of the Photo Shoot
Family photographs require more casual attire than a professional portfolio.
Your wardrobe will change depending on the purpose of the the photo shoot. If your profession requires a professional headshot, portfolio or resume picture, choose clothes that show off your attributes. For example, a tuxedo or three-piece suit are good choices for a fashion or glamour-style portfolio. For a casual or family-style photograph, jeans and a shirt or pullover are appropriate. Many professional photographers recommend bringing along a variety of clothing styles, so you can mix and match.
Pattern and Style of Clothes
Photographers recommend wearing solid colors without patterns.
Photographers recommend wearing solid colors instead of patterns, like polka dots or stripes, for your shoot. When choosing colors to wear for the shoot, don't select black or white, since they can cause problems for the camera. White can wash out your image, and black can swallow up color and make you appear sallow. Instead, wear colors close to your natural skin tone, or a color that accentuates your natural coloring. Avoid bright colors like orange, reds or yellows, and clothing with logos -- you don't want the clothes to take center stage instead of you. Choose a shirt with an interesting collar, and perhaps some texture to give the picture an eye-catching look.
Family and Group Shoots
Family or group pictures should have uniform outfits.
If you're a father having a picture taken with your family, or part of a group shoot, choose an outfit that complements the rest of the family or group. Choose one person in the family or group and base the family or group's look on her outfit. Coordinating clothing creates a uniform look for the picture.
Accessories
Keep accessories simple and elegant, not bulky or garish.
Keep your accessories to a minimum. While necklaces, rings and watches can look great, you don't want to overdo it with bulky pieces. Simple and elegant jewelry enhances your look without distracting the eye. (See Resources.)
