Sew on a Graduation Gown Collar
Senior ring. Senior picture. Graduation announcements. After long years of studying and hard work, graduation is right around the corner. There's a problem; when you tried on your cap and gown, the collar kept sliding off your shoulders. The last thing you want as a memory of graduation is your collar falling to the floor just as you are handed your diploma. This can be prevented simply, by sewing the collar to the graduation gown. You don't have to stitch the whole collar, just enough to hold it in place.
Instructions
1. Try on the graduation gown. If the clothes worn under the graduation gown will affect the drape of the collar, be sure to put on the shirt or dress as well
2. Put the collar over the graduation gown. If special honor ribbons are going to be worn with the gown, put those on as well. Adjust the gown, collar and special ribbons until they are hanging properly.
3. Safety pin the collar and ribbons to the graduation gown. Pin only along the back of the collar. If the collar hangs low in back, then pin along the top of the shoulders of the gown. Remove the gown and collar.
4. Sew the collar to the graduation gown. From the underside of the gown, insert the needle through the gown and through the bottom of the collar; do not pierce the top of the collar. Angle the needle downward, back through a nearby section of the collar and through the gown. Continue sewing along the back---or shoulders---of the collar, inserting a back stitch periodically to lock the stitches.
5. Try on the graduation gown again to make sure that the gown and collar hang properly. If they don't, remove the stitches, readjust the collar and stitch it again.
