While there are no rules anymore for formal gloves, there are guidelines
Gloves originated as a simply a functional item meant to protect people's hands from injuries or burns. However, by the 12th century gloves had long been a part of religious ceremonies in bejeweled or ornate forms, and people began to associate them with splendor making them popular with kings and queens. Nowadays, there are no hard and fast rules about when and how women should wear gloves, just guidelines and commonsense.
Instructions
1. Select gloves made out of a festive material such as: velvet, satin, silk, taffeta, cotton and nylon with suede finish, doeskin and glace kid. If your dress is textured, select a material with a sleeker finish. If your dress is made out of a smooth material, select a pair of gloves made out of a more textured or shaggier material.
2. Select 20-button plus gloves for extremely formal occasions or for bare shouldered dresses. These gloves extend up towards the shoulders. The next best option is 16 button gloves which are the standard opera length glove and extend past the elbow.
3. Wear a 10 or 12 button length glove for dresses with cap or elbow sleeves. Select bracelet sleeve gloves for long sleeved dresses or summer cocktail parties or evening dinners.
4. Wear accessories over your gloves, such as larger rings or bracelets. While this was once unacceptable, it's now okay to do.
5. Take off your gloves before eating at a formal event. Place them in your lap with your napkin over them.
