During the Jazz Age, there was a dichotomy between traditional styles and what were considered radical trends in men's fashion. According to Men's Fashion Love to Know, men had been accustomed to wearing extremely formal suits, "changing clothes several times a day as propriety dictated." The roaring 1920s was a time in which attitudes and fashion became more relaxed, reflecting great music and good times.
Jazz Suits
According to 1920s Fashion and Music, the "Jazz Suit" featured a tightly-fitted jacket with a high waist and narrow shoulders. Some men purchased these suits locally, while others had their suits custom-made at tailor shops in Rome. Fabrics were brighter and more bold than traditional styles, perfect for an evening of fun and dancing.
Oxford Bags
Wide-legged trousers, better known as "Oxford Bags," became more popular during the 1920s. To emphasize a man's masculine physique, sharp creases down the front of the pants became the growing trend. To draw attention to the shoes, cuffs were also added to the bottom of the trousers.
Accessories
Suspenders lost some popularity during the 1920s, as the waist-slimming belts grew more acceptable to hold up the pants. Another accessory for a man in the 1920s was a hat. It was a common propriety that men did not go out in public without a hat on his head. During the summer months, a Panama-style straw hat was the norm. In the colder months, the men switched to a felt Fedora.
