Pull your hair back into a bump and hold it with bobby pins.
A bump of volume at the crown of the head can give an updo a touch of elegance and class. The trick to getting a bump to stay put in your hair is to secure it tightly with a few bobby pins. Sweep up your hair in a casual way and get that bump going. With a few strategically placed bobby pins, the bump will sit prettily on the top of your head.
Instructions
1. Squirt a generous amount of mousse into the palm of your hand and rub your hands together lightly. Apply the mousse to your hair, working it thoroughly from your roots to the tips of your hair. The mousse enhances the texture of your hair and makes it hold the style better.
2. Brush through your hair to detangle.
3. Separate a section of hair at your crown and comb it straight up. Backcomb this section of hair slightly by inserting the teeth of the comb into the hair about 3 to 4 inches up from the scalp. Move the comb toward your scalp several times gently. Backcombing gives the hair at the crown additional volume. Separate one or two more small sections in this same area and backcomb them slightly.
4. Pull your hair at the top of your head and at both sides back into a half updo with your fingers. Do not comb this hair back, but rather rake it back with your fingers to give it a tousled look. As you pull the hair back, be careful not to smooth the backcombed hair at the crown too much or you might flatten it.
5. Gather the hair together immediately behind your crown and then push it forward gently to give it a bump. Hold the hair tightly at your scalp with your fingers.
6. Insert a bobby pin into the hair where you are holding it with your fingers, making sure the bobby pin holds the hair in the pushed-forward position. Insert another bobby pin from the opposite direction at the same point. Cross the bobby pins over each other in an "X" formation to make sure they stay tight.
7. Add one or two more bobby pins to hold the gathered hair tightly.
8. Pull a few tendrils out around your face to frame it softly.
9. Spray your half updo bump style lightly with hair spray to make sure it does not move.
