Sew a pleated pocket in contrasting colors to attach to your clothing.
Learn sew a pleated pocket and attach them to everything including jumpers, skirts, shirts, dresses, diaper bags, purses and anything else you can think of. You can use pleated pockets to create wall or door hangers. Use a variety of fabrics and matters to mix and match to create personalized pockets for yourself or as gifts. Create several pockets for the same item so you can find your belongings easily.
Instructions
1. Cut pieces of fabric. The pieces needed are a top and bottom band approximately 12-inches long and 1 ½ to 2-inches wide and two rectangles that are 5 ½ by 8-inches for the pocket. Adjust sizes for smaller or larger pockets. For more pleats, make the bands longer.
2. Press open ¼-inch seam allowances around all pleated pocket pieces.
3. Place rectangles pieces right sides together and sew the bottom and sides together, leaving the top open. Bottom of pockets can be square, rounded or any other desired shape. Draw the shape onto the fabric with a marker before sewing.
4. Trim the corners and seams.
5. Make pleats by tucking every ½ -inch of the bottom of the pocket into the wide band. The sizes of the pleats depend on how long your band is.
6. Attach top of the pocket to the wide band by adjusting the size of the the pleats to fit exactly into the top band.
7. Sew the top and band with a topstitch to close everything up.
8. Add embellishments if desired such as sequins, buttons, bowties or ribbons.
