Prom Suit Ideas

,

Prom is one of the most memorable events in the life of any high-school student. For most, prom is the first formal event of one's life. You'll be moving around, taking pictures and interacting with friends. With that in mind, your prom suit you select should be a reflection of your personal taste and style. Here are some prom suit ideas to get you prepared for your big night.

Traditional Tuxedo

Before picking out your prom suit, consult with your date to find out what color dress she's wearing. Your vest or cummerbund, and your tie, should be the same color as your date's dress. If you prefer a classic look, you can go with a traditional tuxedo--one that hearkens back to the debonair look of the James Bond movies. Most traditional tuxedos have a black jacket and pants, white shirt, black shoes and a black tie. A vest or cummerbund is optional with a tuxedo. However, you can exchange a black jacket for a white jacket. If you plan to rent your tux and accessories, it's easier to rent a traditional tuxedo than a retro tux.

Go Retro

If it suits your personal taste, you may wear a retro tuxedo to your prom. Retro tuxes stem from the 1970s and '80s. Retro tux colors include Carolina blue, pink and yellow. Some retro tuxedos come with matching shoes. If you want to wear a retro tux, discuss color ideas with your date. This will help you make a fashionable impression, by properly coordinating your retro tux color with your date's dress. You may find it difficult to rent a retro tuxedo. In most cases, you'll have to buy the tux, shoes, shirt, tie and vest.

A Modern Aproach

Wearing a modern tuxedo is another approach you could take. Modern tuxedo jackets are usually a little longer than traditional tux jackets. Modern tuxedos allow you to match various color schemes, like peach, mint green, and many other pastel colors. Modern tuxes are available for rental at retail stores like the Men's Wearhouse. In most cases, you'll be able to rent your shoes, cuff links, tux and shirt, in a package deal. Give yourself a minimum of one month to pick your tux, and have your measurements taken. You can buy your tuxedo and accessories, though that can cost hundreds of dollars more than a rental.
